Not everyone knows that we have one of the finest collections of artists’ books in the nation, right here in Burlington. Join us in a hands-on exploration that will stimulate your imagination and spark your creativity!

September Meeting Reflections
We had a great time at the September 12th Book Arts Guild meeting. Ann Joppe-Mercure provided us with the materials to construct three hard cover books in the space of less than two hours!
The first book contained a simple accordion signature, the second a single sewn signature book, and the third contained a post-it pad. We covered them with decorative paper or cloth, and made the spines with pre-cut book cloth from Ann. It was so satisfying to leave the meeting with three lovely, 3” x 3” little books.
They felt really good in the hand and everyone could leave feeling confident that they could make more of these books with the skills Ann taught us.

B.A.G. News
*** The Book Arts Guild of Vermont is proud to be participating in this year’s Burlington Book Festival on October 12 – 14, 2018 at the UVM Alumni House Silver Pavilion. This annual event celebrates the written word by offering readings, book signings, panels, workshops, demos, family activities, and special events.
We have been invited to exhibit original works at the festival to introduce the community to the book arts and increase awareness of our organization. We will have an exhibit during the evening opening ceremonies on Friday, October 12 as well as on Saturday, October 13 throughout the day. During the exhibit time, we have also committed to demonstrating various book structures (not hands-on workshops).
Although the deadline for submitting work for sale has passed, the festival is very generously providing us with exhibit space free of charge. We would love to share your beautiful work with literary book lovers who may not have had much exposure to the book arts. Please consider submitting work for display! You can submit new work or something you have previously exhibited.
If you would like to submit work for the exhibit, please download the entry form and bring it, along with your work, to the October meeting at Special Collections. If you cannot attend the meeting but would like to submit work, please email Jill Abilock by Monday, October 8 to make arrangements to get your work to her.
We also need volunteers to “staff” the exhibit table on Saturday, October 13 during the festival. Volunteers at the 2016 festival found the experience fun and rewarding – please join us this year! To sign up to volunteer, simply email Jill!
*** Book Arts Guild of Vermont artists Nina Gaby and Jill Abilock will be presenting Exploring Dimensionality in Narrative at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday October 13th at the Burlington Book Festival with moderator Rachel Moore, director of the Helen Day Art Center.
Artists Josh Turk and Cynthia Close round out the panel. “Words can be presented on the flat page but can the thoughts behind those words find shape in other materials?” This and other questions will be considered in what is sure to be a lively dialogue. B.A.G. will be exhibiting and offering demonstrations in conjunction with this panel.
*** The Book Arts Guild of Vermont has once again reserved table space at the Northampton Book and Book Arts Fair in Northampton, MA. The Fair will take place Friday, November 30th from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, December 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Smith College.
This is an opportunity for the Book Arts Guild to spread the word about book arts, show and sell work, and meet other like minded book people. Last year, a group of members stayed at an Airbnb during the show and had a great time together.

*** On October 13 & 14, Elissa Campbell will be participating in the statewide Fall Open Studio Weekend. The event is a great way to combine fall foliage viewing and harvest activities with visits to artists across Vermont.
Come for a tour of the studio, demonstrations, and tantalizing talk about the world of handmade books. Feel free to paw through my paper drawers and peruse my extensive library of bookbinding manuals! There will also be selection of bookbinding supplies available for purchase.

Book Arts News
*** Dartmouth College is presenting two days of programming featuring book artist Daniel E. Kelm – Daniel Kelm and Poetic Science: A Life in Science and Art.
On Thursday, October 4th from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., there will be reception for Kelm in the East Reading Room of Baker-Berry Library. This will be followed by a lecture from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
On Friday, October 5th from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., there will be a follow up to Thursday’s lecture. Kelm will have books and objects to show in a more intimate setting allowing for more conversation. This event will be held in the Kresge Library Conference Room.
Daniel E. Kelm is a book artist who enjoys expanding the concept of the book. He is known for his innovative structures as well as his traditional work. His expression as an artist emerges from the integration of work in science and the arts. Alchemy is a common theme in his book work. Before Daniel began his career in the book arts he received formal training in chemistry and taught at the University of Minnesota.

*** On Thursday, October 18 at 5:30 p.m., the Silver Special Collections Library at the University of Vermont is presenting The Stewardship of History: Reconfiguring the Markings of Time, a lecture with Michele Burgess.
Burgess will talk about The Stratigraphic Archives, a series of eleven linked artists’ books, all concerned with the archives of both quiet and cataclysmic events – natural and human made. Working in collaboration with poets, Burgess has interwoven remnants of human and natural history, questioning the honesty and inclusivity of our institutionalized “record keeping.”
Michele Burgess works in book arts, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. She is the director of Brighton Press and collaborates with other artists and poets on projects that involve the book as an art medium. Burgess’s books are housed in over seventy-five public collections across the country, including the University of Vermont.
The lecture is free and open to the public and will be held in the Marsh Room at Billings Library.

*** On Friday October 12th at 4:00 p.m., the Kate Cheney Chappell 83 Center for Book Arts will host Building A Sustainable Visual Art Practice, a lecture with Andrea Dezsö.
Andrea Dezsö is a visual artist who works across a broad range of media including drawing, painting, artist’s books, embroidery, cut paper, animation, sculpture, site-specific installation and public art. Dezsö’s permanent public art has been installed in two New York City subway stations, at the United States Embassy in Bucharest, Romania and at CUNY BMCC Fiterman Hall in Lower Manhattan. Community Garden, Dezsö’s mosaic in the New York City subway was recognized as Best American Public Art in 2007 by Americans for the Arts.
Dezsö exhibits in museums and galleries around the world. She is Associate Professor of Art at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA and maintains studios in NYC and in Western Massachusetts.
The Kate Cheney Chappell 83 Center for Book Arts is located in Portland, Maine. The lecture will be held in the University Events Room on the 7th floor of the Glickman Family Library.

Book Arts Classes
*** On Saturday, October 13, 2018, the Kate Cheney Chappell 83 Center for Book Arts is hosting a Tunnel Book workshop with Andrea Dezsö. The workshop will be held in room 424 in Luther Bonney Hall at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.
When popped open tunnel books reveal miniature, multi-layered worlds viewers can peek into as into dioramas. Structurally, tunnel books belong in the same family as carousel books and toy theaters and were extremely popular during the Victorian era. In this class students will create a fully developed one-of-a-kind artists book of their own design, based on a four-layer, hand-cut and assembled single scene tunnel book developed by Dezsö using either a subtractive (paper cutting), an additive (collage) method or a mix of the two;
Students will learn to rapid prototype by first creating a tunnel book model to understand the form, followed by creating their fully developed books. Students will be encouraged to consider composition, layering, materials and to treat form and content as an interdependent whole as they create their one-of-a-kind tunnel books. All levels welcome.

*** The Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, MA has two book arts classes coming up this fall. Here’s the scoop:
Altered Books Workshop with Cristina Hajosy will take place on Sunday, November 11th from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Transform books, old or new, into art objects. The book becomes a canvas, a sculpture or a reliquary of personally meaningful content. Draw inspiration from the book’s author or contents, or purely use the book as a structure. Incorporate paper cutting, collage, bookmaking and other processes. The instructor will have books on hand, or bring your own, along with small objects and images to include.
Paste Paper with Cristina Hajosy will take place on Sunday November 25th from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Paste paper is traditionally used for endpapers and book covers, offering a textural and colorful alternative to marbling. See some historical and contemporary approaches, then create your own. Start with a traditional method, then learn ways to make more creative and painterly versions.

Program: Amy L. Burns presents How to Package Your Work and Cake Box Books
Anyone who attended the December Swap and Shop meeting last year had the opportunity to see (and purchase) Amy Burns‘ beautiful books, and also to see how much her unique and professional-looking packaging enhanced their appeal.
Amy, who has been creating and selling handmade books to people around the world for 5 years, will begin our September meeting with a presentation on how she packages and presents her work using simple materials and tools that create a professional yet handmade look. If you’ve ever considered packaging your own work to sell (perhaps at a BAG event!), you will learn how to create a cohesive look and feel easily and economically.
In the second part of the meeting, Amy will lead a hands-on workshop, showing us a fun way to recycle boxes from cake mix, crackers, or whatever else we’ve got in the cupboard, into books. These books make wonderful personalized gifts (like using a brownie mix box to make a book for a friend who loves brownies…you could even use chocolate brown paper for the text block!)
Please Bring:
- Cake mix type box (muffin mix, baking soda, Junior mints, etc.)
- NOTE: The left side panel of your box will become the spine – since we will only have time to sew 3 or 4 signatures into the book, please choose a box with a narrow side panel (no more than 1″ wide).
- 16 sheets of paper for the text block, cut to size as follows:
- Height: The same as the cover height. Paper grain should run in the height direction, parallel to the spine.
- Width: Double the width of the cover (since the pages will be folded to create signatures) minus 1/4 inch (so the pages don’t stick out beyond the cover)
- Scissors and/or an X-acto knife
- Cutting mat
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Awl
- Straight (not curved) bookbinders needle
- Portable punching cradle (or an old phone book)
- Bone folder
Amy will provide bookbinding thread and graph paper.
Request to more experienced members: Not everyone has specialized tools, like an awl, bookbinding needles or a bone folder. If you happen to have extra, it would be wonderful if you could bring them in to share with a neighbor who doesn’t. Thanks!
August Meeting Reflections
She really does cut with sheep shears! Carolyn Guest wowed us all with her papercut art that is full of meaning. Taking a cue from the Polish craft of papercutting, she uses Vermont barns as ‘story boards’, filling them with images that are particular to her experience and life in Vermont.
Her whimsical and delicate images provided us with visual pleasure and a unique perspective on rural life. It was clear in her presentation that Carolyn gets pleasure from talking about and demonstrating her art, and her humor gave us all encouragement to test out her tricks.
We folded and cut snowflakes, and then produced a small silhouette image with interior cuts. While we all struggled with small scissors or x-acto knives, Carolyn clipped minute bits with her sheep shears creating feathery light snowflakes. Thanks to Carolyn for making it look so easy!

*** Several members of the Book Arts Guild of Vermont will be represented at the Artistree Gallery in Woodstock, Vermont. Included in the show, UNBOUND VOL III, are works by Amy Burns, Dorsey Hogg, Ann Joppe Mercure, Debra Kraemer, Lorraine Reynolds, Carolyn Shattuck, and Marcia Vogler.
The broad theme of UNBOUND VOL. III encompasses all of the possibilities of what we may think or may not think a “book” is. Is it story? An entry to another world? An exploration? What does it indicate? This show, juried by Erin Sweeney, looks to explore this idea of “the book” and all the ways artists use that format as a stepping-off point or as material to explore new ideas.
We’d like to wish special congratulations to Dorsey Hogg for winning second prize in the exhibition – way to go!
The show runs from July 26 – September 7, 2013.

*** On September 19th, the New England Guild of Book Workers will team with the North Bennet Street School to present The Artist Awakened, a free lecture by Edgard Claes.
Edgard Claes is widely regarded as one of Europe’s most technically proficient and stylistically progressive bookbinders. Originally from Achel, Belgium, Claes has been a monk of the Crosier Order since 1976 and currently resides in Cujik, Netherlands, where he practices bookbinding as well as sculpture and painting. The visit in September will be his first visit to the United States.
In addition to speaking about and showing slides of his life, work and influences generally, Claes explores the ways in which materials, color and technique become interwoven in his work. Please visit the NBSS website to reserve a space.
Book Arts Classes
*** On October 5th, the New England Guild of Book Workers is co-sponsoring a Coptic and Bookworm Binding workshop with the Kate Cheney Chappell Center for Book Arts at the University of Southern Maine. The workshop will be held at the Wishcamper Center Multi-Purpose Room at the USM Portland Campus.
In this workshop, participants will work with Bexx Caswell, bookbinder and book conservator from Iowa City. Caswell will lead participants to create three hardcover, non-adhesive bindings in miniature.

*** Bill Hanscom is teaching Enclosures for Preservation and Beyond on October 13, 2013 at the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science in Boston. Boxes, wrappers and slipcases are widely used to house and protect library and archival collections, but they also offer terrific opportunities for artistic exploration.
Beyond the protective housing of original artistic works such as books or print portfolios, enclosures can be altered and embellished to complement, enhance, and conspire with their contents. Over the course of this workshop students will work to create a reference set of enclosures which neatly nest together.

*** Daniel Kelm will teach The Book Restructured: Wire Edge Binding at his studio in Easthampton, MA, September 21-22, 2013. If you’re interested in creating a nontraditional book (e.g., a book with thick pages, or a book that is sculptural), the achievement of your goal may require the use of a material or movement not possible with conventional structures.
Wire edge hinging grew out of just such a challenge. This binding configuration utilizes a thin metal wire along the hinging edge of each page. The metal wire is exposed at regular intervals creating knotting stations where thread attaches one page to the next. The result is a binding that opens exceptionally well, and gives you the option of producing unusual shapes.
During the two days we will look at various wire-edge structures useful for books, enclosures, and articulated sculpture. You will produce both a simple codex, and an accordion model that forms a tetrahedron.

Program: Carolyn Guest presents An Evening Adventure with Paper Cut Art
Our August evening will include a “Trunk Show” sampling of work by paper cut artist Carolyn Guest. Carolyn creates original art by cutting paper with sheep shearing shears – a rudimentary tool that continually challenges her to push the limits of fine detail in her designs, which are inspired by her rural heritage.
Carolyn has also chosen to cut with sheep shears to honor her Polish teachers and the women who have had to make do with what they have. In addition to her rural designs, Carolyn also cuts silhouettes of individuals in person using a “look and cut” technique to capture a person’s essence in profile, using her scissors to “draw” as she cuts.
After a short presentation about paper cut art, Carolyn will demonstrate her techniques for paper cutting, followed by a hands-on mini workshop creating one of a kind story board cuttings.
Bring your favorite cutting tools and pencils to join in on the evening’s adventures. Paper and extra small scissors & a few pair of sheep shears will be provided.
July Meeting Reflections
Erin Sweeney wowed us all with her amazing artist’s life story and work at July meeting. Truly an inspiring presentation, she shared slides of her hometown as well as her work, and gave us insight into what shapes her thinking.
Then on to some hands-on demonstrations easy enough for us all to follow. Best of all, she provided us with cool paper of her own prints! We ran a little late because we just couldn’t stop folding.
We all came away with a fold book, a pocket model, a stage with marquis model, and a slipcase to hold them. Special thanks to Erin!

*** Daniel Kelm is offering Leather Onlay & Inlay at his studio, The Wide Awake Garage, in Easthampton, MA, August 17 – 18, 2013.
Onlay and inlay are traditional techniques for design that still speak to us today. Both methods use pieces of leather to lay down fields of color. We will focus on a technique that stabilizes the leather sufficiently to produce onlay and inlay with clean, hard edges.
Participants will each produce five models: four variations of onlay, and one inlay – all on leather-covered board. Details of paste production, leather preparation using the Schärf-Fix paring machine, knife selection, cutting surfaces, and onlay/inlay application will be covered.

*** Carol Barton will be teaching Book Arts: Paper Engineering and Sculptural Binding at the North Country Studio Workshops from January 28, 2014 – February 2, 2014. This is an ideal session for book artists, teachers, graphic designers, and anyone who likes to play with paper.
Discover the magic of the sculptural book through exploration of three-dimensional and pop-up forms. Learn how to use book structures to help convey your message. Participants will construct a series of pop-ups from simple to more complex glued structures, along with an accordion book, a carousel book, and a tunnel book.

Program: Artist Talk and Hands-on Activity with Erin Sweeney
Join us in July when book artist, printmaker, and installation artist Erin Sweeney presents her work and practice, which currently explores, among other themes, the notion of home.
Her studio, Lovely In The Home Press, is in Peterborough, NH, the town that playwright Thornton Wilder used as inspiration for his Grover’s Corners in the play Our Town. Erin has a love/hate relationship with her small town, as many people do, and much of her work is centered around this relationship.
In addition to sharing her inspiring work, Erin will lead us in a hands-on exploration of the magic of one-sheet folded books, demonstrating how they can be used as building blocks to make sculptural work, tell longer stories, and bring your viewer into your pieces in unexpected ways.
Erin will supply the paper, but asks that everyone bring the following tools:
- Scissors
- Bone folder
- Pencil
- X-acto knife
- Cutting mat

*** B.A.G. member Nancy Stone will exhibit her handmade books in the exhibit Drawn to Music. Nancy’s work will include Line Notes, a window installation of seven translucent accordion books traced from her sketches of performing musicians; Vibrations, a suite of six triptych-books of watercolor paintings developed from Line Notes; and Ecclesiastes III, a suite of diverse pop-up, white-on-white books based on “A time for war; a time for peace”, etc.
The show runs from June 4, 2013 – August 29, 2013 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, VT. The opening is on Friday June 7, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with an artists’ talk at 6:30 p.m. Summer hours are Tuesday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 pm. Jazz, folk and classical musical events will correlate with the exhibit.

This experimental workshop is like a mini retreat, where students who have taken some book arts classes in the past can explore taking their artist books to a new level. Enjoy the creative environment of working with other artists – it’s like a book arts play date!
In this 3-part workshop, the use of both standard and unconventional materials will be demonstrated, along with creative ways to apply them to the book arts. A wide range of tools and materials will be available for you to try, including collage, carved block stamps, image transfer, Dremel, and paper cutting. Different binding techniques will also be explored.

*** On August 9-11, 2013, Velma Bolyard will teach the traditional Japanese art of shifu, a spun and woven paper textile, both a quiet and meditative art at Long Ridge Farm in Westmoreland, NH.
You’ll learn all aspects of the process, from paper to finished small weavings. Beginning with a large sheet of lokta or kozo paper the process moves through preparing and spinning paper into thread or yarn, wet or dry for comparison, to ultimately weaving the threads on a simple loom that each student creates from repurposed materials.
During free moments, a bouquet of simple book structures will be taught, one of which can showcase each student’s workshop samples and thoughts. For more information or to register, please visit the Long Ridge Farm website.
*** Carol Barton will be teaching Book Arts: Paper Engineering and Sculptural Binding at the North Country Studio Workshops from January 28, 2014 – February 2, 2014. This is an ideal session for book artists, teachers, graphic designers, and anyone who likes to play with paper.
Discover the magic of the sculptural book through exploration of three-dimensional and pop-up forms. Learn how to use book structures to help convey your message. Participants will construct a series of pop-ups from simple to more complex glued structures, along with an accordion book, a carousel book, and a tunnel book.
Registration for 2014 opened on June 15, 2013.
*** Richard Horton is teaching Handmade Photo Album Structures and Strategies on July 27 – 28, 2013 at White Square Books in Easthampton, MA. The purpose of the workshop is to teach you to design albums that are beautiful, safe for real photos, and easy to look through, with pages that lie flat.
You will take with you from the course a finished model of a 10-leaf album with its paper cover and box. You will take a small stiff-leaved sewed codex, and you’ll take at least 2 large leaf models demonstrating multiple mounts on both sides of the page.

*** Daniel Kelm is offering The Leather Intensive at his studio, The Wide Awake Garage, in Easthampton, MA from July 21 – 26, 2013. During this six-day intensive each participant will produce a full-leather binding using techniques traditional to English and French construction.
Variations in structure and the characteristics of materials will be discussed extensively. Endsheet configuration, text sewing, rounding and backing, hand-sewn endbanding, spine lining, leather paring (both with knife and manual paring machine), covering, and leather joint application will be explored.

Program: Artist Talk and Hands-on Activity with Erin Sweeney
Join us in July when book artist, printmaker, and installation artist Erin Sweeney presents her work and practice, which currently explores, among other themes, the notion of home.
Her studio, Lovely In The Home Press, is in Peterborough, NH, the town that playwright Thornton Wilder used as inspiration for his Grover’s Corners in the play Our Town. Erin has a love/hate relationship with her small town, as many people do, and much of her work is centered around this relationship.
In addition to sharing her inspiring work, Erin will lead us in a hands-on exploration of the magic of one-sheet folded books, demonstrating how they can be used as building blocks to make sculptural work, tell longer stories, and bring your viewer into your pieces in unexpected ways.
Erin will supply the paper, but asks that everyone bring the following tools:
- Scissors
- Bone folder
- Pencil
- X-acto knife
- Cutting mat
Reflections on June’s Exhibit Opening
The opening reception for the Book Arts Guild of Vermont show, There’s No Place Like Home, was an exciting and inspiring evening. The gallery was abuzz with members of the guild as well as interested observers, enjoying our show as well as the wonderful show, Tell us a Tale, in the main galleries at Studio Place Arts in Barre.
We shared details about the construction, materials, problems, and surprising outcomes of our pieces with the appreciative audience, enjoyed some great snacks, and connected with old and new friends.
The show, set up by Sue Higby of SPA, looked amazing and filled the gallery with energy. Thanks to all the artists who participated- what a talented group we are. And thanks to SPA for hosting the show.

*** Congrats to B.A.G. member Carolyn Shattuck for her recent feature on the Center for Book Arts blog. CBA intern Kate Burns had the opportunity to visit Carolyn during this spring’s Open Studio Weekend.
Carolyn spoke about her bookmaking and printing processes as well as her inspirations while allowing Kate and her father, Dave, who was visiting the east coast from Montana, to nose around her workspace and take some pictures.
*** B.A.G. member Nancy Stone will exhibit her handmade books in the exhibit Drawn to Music. Nancy’s work will include Line Notes, a window installation of seven translucent accordion books traced from her sketches of performing musicians; Vibrations, a suite of six triptych-books of watercolor paintings developed from Line Notes; and Ecclesiastes III, a suite of diverse pop-up, white-on-white books based on “A time for war; a time for peace”, etc.
The show runs from June 4, 2013 – August 29, 2013 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, VT. The opening is on Friday June 7, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with an artists’ talk at 6:30 p.m. Summer hours are Tuesday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 pm. Jazz, folk and classical musical events will correlate with the exhibit.

*** The New England Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers members Stacie Dolin and Amy Lapidow’s book, Book Art Studio Handbook: Techniques and Methods for Binding Books, Creating Albums, Making Boxes and Enclosures, and More provides the inspiration or the text block for an online exhibition now available for viewing.
The exhibit features the work of 12 NEGBW members, including McKey Berkman, Brittany Fay, Samuel Feinstein, Karen Hanmer, Barbara Hebard & students, Dana Kull, Amy Lapidow, Anne McLain, John Nove, Todd Pattison, and Janine Wong.

*** The New England Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers is hosting two workshops in June with Paul Johnson in Maine (one workshop will be repeated):
- Spirit House – A Three Dimensional Pop-Up Model: In this workshop, you will make a 3D pop-up spirit house from paper. There are no folds – the whole structure (comprising over thirty separate parts) is made from hinges and dovetails joints and will fold down flat.
- Book as Architecture: In this workshop, you will make a pop-up gazebo in which there are no folds and therefore no paper ‘fatigue’. All sections are fastened together using a range of paper hinges, locks, and dovetail joints. Sections can be modified and redesigned as the model develops – you simply take out one section and replace it with another.

*** Bill Hanscom is teaching Album Structures at the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science in Boston on Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. In this workshop you will explore the construction and mechanics of a variety of album structures from the traditional to the intriguingly unconventional.
You will learn several structures, including a Simple Board Book Album, the Storage Book, Pocket Album, Spider Book, Multi-leaf Accordion, and an Accordion Album.
