Program: Book Arts Guild Exhibit Gallery Talk
Thanks to everyone for their beautiful entries for the Spring exhibit, Nature: Beasts and Botanicals, at the Rae Harrell Gallery in Hinesburg!
Please note, the opening has been postponed until May 16th due to conflicts. Please join us at the Gallery from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., with artists’ talks starting at 6:30 p.m.
If you have a piece in the show, we would love for you to say a few words about your work. The Book Arts Guild will be providing finger food for the opening, so if you would like to bring something, please contact Marcia at marciavogler@gmavt.net.
Again, the opening will take the place of our regular monthly meeting. We hope to see all of you there!
April Meeting Reflections
Our esteemed co-chairs, Jill Abilock and Elissa Campbell, led an exciting evening where everyone wore masks! Presenting Meet the Dremel – A Book Artist’s Dream Tool, Jill and Elissa gave information-filled demonstrations covering the basics of the rotary tool and its myriad applications for book arts.
The pair passed around samples of various materials on which they had used the Dremel to sand, cut, drill, etch, and carve surface designs. They also brought finished pieces to show how they have included these techniques in their own work. It was an inspiring evening, and doubly so to see so many people come out for the meeting. Thanks to all who attended, and extra special thanks to Jill and Elissa for sharing.

*** On May 24 & 25 (Memorial Day Weekend), the statewide Open Studio Weekend is offering a wonderful selection of book artsy studios for you to visit.

*** Dan St. John of Chena River Marblers is hosting a Warehouse Sale on May 17th from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at 59 North Street in Hatfield, MA. Dan has amassed a large collection of paper, board and other materials from the historic paper mills of the Pioneer Valley, many of which are no longer in operation.
Included in this sale will be Neuman’s acid-free binder’s board in .08” and .09” thickness, lots of .010” Bristol, 4-ply mat board, paper in rolls, Chena River marbled paper, Mohawk text paper, and a variety of other text weight paper in a range of colors. Some marbling equipment is expected to be available for sale as well.
*** ArtisTree Gallery is looking for submissions for their upcoming exhibit, Unbound Vol IV. The broad theme of UNBOUND: VOL IV encompasses all of the possibilities of what we may think or may not think a “book” is.
Is it story? An entry to another world? An exploration? What does it indicate? This juried show looks to explore these ideas of “the book” and all the ways artists use its format as a stepping off point or as a material to explore new ideas.
This call for submission is open to all New England and New York residents of the U.S. who are 18 years of age or older. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Submissions must be postmarked by mail or Emailed by June 14, 2014. For more information, please visit the ArtisTree Gallery’s website.
Book Arts Classes
*** Bill Hanscom will be offering an Album Structures workshop on July 12, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Simmons Graduate School of Library and Information Science in Boston.
Albums provide a way to organize and protect collections of all kinds such as photographs and archival materials. In this workshop we will explore the construction and mechanics of a variety of album structures from the traditional to the intriguingly unconventional. Each provides a different approach to the album, as well as exciting opportunities for experimentation with embellishment with a wide variety of media, even becoming art objects on their own.
Structures will include: a Simple Board Book Album, The Storage Book, Pocket Album, Spider Book, Multi-leaf Accordion, and Accordion Album.

*** Jill Timm will be presenting her fabulous workshop The Amazing Dremel on May 10-11 at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, MA. The workshop will be hosted by the New England Guild of Book Workers. The registration fee is $250.00 with an additional material fee of $50.00, which includes your own deluxe Dremel kit with over 100 various attachments.
In this workshop, Jill will demonstrate the limitless options of the Dremel tool. Each student will provide their own Dremel and learn about the various attachment options while using the tool to drill, cut, carve, etch, shape, polish and grind into non-traditional book materials. Students can expect to experiment on materials such as glass, plastic, metals, wood, tile and more.

Program: Meet the Dremel – A Book Artist’s Dream Tool with Elissa Campbell and Jill Abilock
The Dremel is an amazing handheld rotary tool that can cut, grind, drill, etch, carve, polish, buff and trim materials ranging from bookboard, wood and linoleum to glass, ceramic tile, and metal.
Inspired by Jill Timm and her Amazing Dremel workshop, Jill Abilock and Elissa Campbell will share what makes the Dremel such a valuable tool in their studios. The first part of the presentation will include Dremel basics and how-tos, as well as live demonstrations on a variety of materials.
You will see how the Dremel can be used to:
- Carve linoleum into a handmade stamp
- Quickly and accurately drill holes in bookboard for intricate hand-sewn binding patterns
- Carve, cut, sand and finish wood
- Etch designs into ceramic tiles
- Buff, polish, deboss and distress metal
Elissa and Jill will also bring the sample books of materials they worked with in Jill Timm’s workshop, which, in addition to the above, include glass, mirrors, Plexiglas, and polymer clay.
In the later portion of the meeting, you will have an opportunity to try out a Dremel and experience for yourself what a handy tool it is!
What to bring:
- Dremel tool: Jill and Elissa each have only one Dremel. In order to enable the greatest number of people to get a hands-on feel for the tool, they have requested that anyone who has a Dremel and is willing to allow others to try it out please bring it to the meeting.
- Safety gear: There will be protective eyewear and face masks at the demo table. Anyone wishing to try out a Dremel will be required to wear both. Please note that regular eyeglasses alone are not considered sufficiently protective (there will be safety glasses available that fit over regular eyeglasses). In addition, there may not be enough face masks for everyone to have their own. If, for hygienic purposes, you prefer not to share, you may wish to bring your own face mask.
One final note: Anyone who suffers from asthma or other respiratory issues might want to bring a good quality face mask to wear during the meeting as there will inevitably be a fair amount of dust in the air.

*** The New England Guild of Book Workers is looking for volunteers for an upcoming Girl Scout event on Saturday April 12th. The event will run from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Camp Maude Eaton at 141 Abbott Street in Andover, MA, which is about 20 miles north of Boston. This program is for Cadette scouts (age 11-14) to earn a Book Artist badge.
There will be an introduction and then five stations that the girls will rotate through which may include printing, accordion folds, a pamphlet, origami book, a scroll and decorating paper. Each rotation will last for about 30 minutes. If you have a book arts technique or project that you’d like to see done with the girl scouts please make some suggestions.
You do not need to be a member of the NEGBW to volunteer. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Todd Pattison at bookandtile@att.net.
*** The annual Book Arts Bazaar at the University of Southern Maine’s Wishcamper Center will take place on Sunday, April 6th. The Bazaar is a festival with book artists, papermakers, bookbinders, printmakers, educators, writers, and all things related to the book.
The Bazaar is free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Wishcamper Center is located on Bedford Street on USM’s Portland Campus. USM’s Kate Cheney Chappell ’83 Center for Book Arts is sponsoring the Book Arts Bazaar and profits from this event support the center.

*** The Mortimer Rare Book Room at Smith College in Northampton, MA will be hosting the first of a new book arts lecture series on Thursday, April 10. Mark Dimunation, Chief of the Rare Book & Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress, will present Single Voice, Many Hands: the Nature of Vision and Collaboration in Contemporary Book Arts. The lecture will be followed by a gala reception.

*** On April 19 – 20, the North Bennet Street School is offering Natural Dyes and Decorative Paper Techniques with Tatiana Ginsberg in Boston.
Working from the Japanese tradition of dyeing paper with natural dyes, students explore creative methods of coloring and patterning handmade papers. Experiment with dyes derived from natural materials such as cochineal, cloves, lotus and much more. The bright and subtle colors derived from plant materials are safe and pleasant to work with and harmonize well with natural fibers.

Program: Celebrating Book Arts
Join us in December as we celebrate our personal successes, challenges and inspirations in the vast field of book arts.
Bring along your creations to show and tell, share a useful tip, technique or tool you’ve discovered, tap into the collective knowledge of the group to puzzle out a challenge you may be having with a project, or bring us all in on what’s inspired you in the past year – anything from books you’ve read or classes you’ve taken to Pinterest boards, blogs and YouTube videos.
You are also welcome to simply come and soak it all in. In either case, expect to leave energized, inspired and eager to entertain your own creative muse!
November Meeting Reflections
Our third annual Card Tricks and Book Blitz meeting drew a large audience, and delivered on the promise of learning new tricks and simple (or maybe a little complex) structures.
Participants shared stories about where their techniques, cards, and structures came from, and followed with demonstrations. Variations on pop-ups, tunnel structures, and flag books were some of the ideas presented to start off the holiday season with good spirits.

The Book Arts Guild of Vermont Needs You!
The primary mission of the Book Arts Guild of Vermont is to act as both an educational and creative resource in the field of book arts. One of the main ways we strive to achieve this is by offering interesting, enriching and inspiring presentations at our monthly meetings. Your presence at meetings goes a long way to supporting this effort – every presentation is enhanced by everyone who attends.
There are two additional – and crucial – ways that you can help us continue to provide high-quality programs every month. The first would be to recognize that you have a skill, a passion, a favorite technique or a body of work that others would love to learn about, and then take the leap and volunteer to share it with us as a presenter. We are truly a group of eager learners, and your efforts will be rewarded with respect, admiration and gratitude.
The second way that you can help keep our programming strong is by becoming a member. In addition to the benefits you receive (outlined in the sidebar of this newsletter), your paid membership enables us to cover expenses such as the fee for our wonderful, well-lit meeting space (which includes free parking!). It also allows us to reimburse presenters for travel expenses and materials, and pays for our website and email newsletter – key tools for keeping our book arts community in touch and informed.

*** Vermont artist Jane Davies will be teaching a one day workshop in the Burlington area on February 22, 2014. The workshop, Text and Image Collage, will allow us to explore the power of image/ word relationships as well as learn basic techniques and principles of collage.
We will create expressive pages that can be used for books, with found and created text, personal photos, and found/altered imagery. This will be a great way to jump start your ideas for the Spring exhibit, and to lose those winter blues.

*** B.A.G. member Amy Burns is showing 2 pieces at Aprons-R-Us, an exhibit in the gallery at Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury, VT. The exhibit celebrates the apron through personal response and historical and cultural artifacts.
The show is open now through January 1, 2014. The opening reception is Friday, December 6, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

*** The Boston Athenæum will be holding a conservation open house on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. A panel discussion, Beyond the Athenæum: Life After the Laboratory, will take place at noon.
Behind the glass doors of the Conservation Laboratory, Athenæum staff work to stabilize, preserve, and restore the Athenaeum’s antiquarian and contemporary treasures. Stop by to get a behind-the-scenes look at treatments at the Athenæum, and watch as conservators demonstrate conservation and bookbinding techniques throughout the day – washing paper, paring and gilding leather with antique brass tools, and mending damaged paper documents.
This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. The Athenæum is located at 10½ Beacon Street in Boston, MA.
*** Chena River Marblers is holding an open studio on December 14 & 15 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. There will be marbling and bookbinding demonstrations, along with an end-of-year overstock and seconds sale.

*** The New England Historic Genealogical Society cordially invites you to a reception on Wednesday, January 15, 2014, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to celebrate the 2013 opening of its conservation lab for the care and repair of materials held in its Library and Special Collections. A presentation by Deborah Rossi, NEHGS Conservation Technician, will be followed by group tours of the lab.

*** The Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, MA is offering Carousel Books with Johanna Finnegan-Topitzer on Sunday, February 23, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This sculptural book opens to form several shadow box-style pages in the round, like a carousel or zoetrope. Create images by cutting, drawing and painting, then precisely cut, fold and assemble accordion pages.

*** The North Bennet Street School is offering Copperplate Script with Maryanne Grebenstein on Saturday – Sunday, December 14 – 15, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The beautiful business ‘hand’ of the 18th and early 19th centuries known as Copperplate Script will be taught in this hands-on workshop. Developed centuries after the broad-edged style of traditional calligraphy, this pointed pen style is useful for wedding invitations and other stationery items, as well as poetry and other framable pieces.

Program: Annual Ethnic Potluck with Swap and Shop
Back by Popular Demand! Join us in December for our Annual Ethnic Potluck with Swap and Shop!
Pot Luck: Let’s celebrate the season with terrific potluck for our December meeting. At past dinners, members have brought a delicious assortment of appetizers, salads, main dishes, and desserts. Bring your best dish, favorite dish, traditional family dish, an ethnic dish and let’s enjoy a meal together. Plan to bring food that does not need to be reheated.
Swap & Shop: After the good eats and conversation, we will set out displays for our Annual Swap and Sale. You are invited to bring in items that are a result of your own creativity and/or bring in materials that you no longer need, knowing that they will inspire someone else’s creativity (i.e.: art papers, fabric, art supplies, tools, overstock items, book arts specialty, magazines, etc.).
Decide whether your offerings will be available for swapping for someone else’s goodies or for sale, and make a sign so designating that. If you have items to sell, make signs (or tags) displaying the price/sales tax.
It’s always a fun evening, with lots of yummy eats and cool book arts treats, and a wonderful way to wrap up the year!
Don’t forget, our meeting date has permanently changed to the second Wednesday of the month!
Reflections on November’s Meeting
Our November meeting, also our second annual Card Tricks and Book Blitz, was a creative explosion of fantastic ideas. Attendees shared many techniques that could easily be adapted for many uses, holiday or otherwise.
Pop ups, accordions, and embroidery were some of the tricks that we all learned and then tried during the hands-on portion of the evening.
Thanks to all for making it a fun night of creative camaraderie.

*** More on that meeting date change – everyone has done a great job this year of adjusting to our new schedule of meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. However, this year the 3rd Wednesday of December is only six days before Christmas.
Fortunately, we have successfully changed the date of our December meeting to the 2nd Wednesday of the month (December 12th). Many thanks to Christina Fulton and the Unitarian Universalist Society Church of Burlington for being so accommodating!
*** B.A.G. is happy to announce that our 2013 spring exhibit, There’s No Place Like Home, will be hosted by Studio Place Arts in Barre, VT. The show will take place at the same time as an exhibit on children’s literature in the Main Floor Gallery.
The exhibit will be in SPA’s Third Floor Gallery from June 4 – July 6, 2013. The deadline for submissions is April 10, 2013. The official call for artists will go out soon, along with more details on the exhibit.

*** The AVA Gallery and Art Center will be holding an Open House on Saturday December 8th, from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. As part of this event, The Paper Room (formerly known as Langdell Paper), will be open.
Not only are there going to be 1,000’s of sheets of handmade paper available for purchase, but there will also be a door prize and refreshments.

*** The College Book Art Association‘s 2013 annual meeting will be held at Yale University on January 4 – 5, 2013. The theme of Art from Artifact: Teaching & Learning from the Object encourages us to explore how teaching and learning from objects can benefit book arts education.

*** Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord is giving a workshop, Calling the Quiet: Making Books for Meditation and Reflection, at the Rolling Ridge Retreat Center, in North Andover, MA on December 12th from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Making books combines the calm and comfort of handwork with the opportunity for reflection. Using recycled materials, we’ll make five simple books on a variety of themes and a box to hold them. No art experience or creative confidence is needed; this workshop is truly for everyone.

*** The Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, MA is offering Tiny Books with Jennifer Erin Hughes on Sunday, Jan 13, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Make awesome little books that fit in the palm of your hand: stab, accordion, single sheet fold-out books and a few more.
Jennifer will also be teaching Leather-Bound Coptic Books on March 10 & 17, 2013, from 10:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. This simple, elegant, exposed-spine, sewn book dates back to the 2nd century AD. Learn the basics of coptic binding to create a beautiful leather-covered blank book.

*** The North Bennet Street School is offering Fundamentals of Bookbinding I with Amy Lapidow on a series of Saturdays, January 26 – February 23, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Students will learn the foundations of bookbinding with hands-on experience and discussion.
The course will cover non-adhesive structures and case bindings, which will teach structural elements, sewing variations, covering and cutting techniques using various materials, tools and equipment. Throughout the course discussions will cover terminology, paper grain and folding, selecting proper materials and tools, and adhesives and their properties.

Program: Book Blitz and Card Tricks
Join us for a card or mini-book exchange B.A.G.-style called Book Blitz and Card Tricks. Get prepared now and join in the fun!
Design a card or small/simple book structure that has a trick or two; maybe a pop-up, French doors or a window. Bring your completed card or mini-book, along with six undecorated cards or mini-book structures to share. We will have an exchange and then engage in some decorating fun.
Please feel free to join in the fun even if you don’t have time to prepare cards or mini-books to bring. We did a similar program last December and there was more than enough to go around. Like last year, expect to go home with some great new ideas, several new tricks up your sleeve, and a few new cards for the season.
Things to bring:
- A decorated card/mini-book with a “trick” (optional)
- 6 card structures of your card/mini-book “trick” to exchange (optional)
- Glue
- Scissors
- X-Acto knife
- Cutting mat
- Ruler
- Decorative punches
- Stamps and ink
- Pens, pencils, markers
- Decorative papers
- Fun stuff!
Don’t forget, our meeting date has permanently changed to the second Wednesday of the month!
Reflections on October’s Meeting
Our October meeting featured Lyna Lou Nordstrom, who demonstrated both monoprinting and gelatin print techniques. After sharing examples of her own work, which features natural patterns and plant materials, she shared her methods and techniques with the eager group.
In the hands-on part of the program, Lyna Lou provided the materials as well as inspiration to get us going on our own prints. The meeting went longer than usual because the group was having so much fun! Thanks to Lyna Lou, participants came away with exciting small works of their own.
A big thank you to both Lyna Lou for lugging all the materials to the meeting and to Jill for setting up and cleaning up.

*** More on that meeting date change – everyone has done a great job this year of adjusting to our new schedule of meeting on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. However, this year the 3rd Wednesday of November falls on the day before Thanksgiving and the 3rd Wednesday of December is only six days before Christmas.
Fortunately, we have successfully changed the dates of our November and December meetings to the 2nd Wednesday of the month (November 14th and December 12th). Many thanks to Christina Fulton and the Unitarian Universalist Society Church of Burlington for being so accommodating!
*** B.A.G. is happy to announce that our 2013 spring exhibit, There’s No Place Like Home, will be hosted by Studio Place Arts in Barre, VT. The show will take place at the same time as an exhibit on children’s literature in the Main Floor Gallery.
The exhibit will be in SPA’s Third Floor Gallery from June 4 – July 6, 2013. The deadline for submissions is April 10, 2013. The official call for artists will go out soon, along with more details on the exhibit.

*** The Paper Room (formerly known as Langdell Paper) at AVA Art Center is having an open studio on Saturday November 10th, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Not only are there going to be 1,000’s of sheets of handmade paper available for purchase, but there will also be free paper, a door prize, and refreshments.

*** Non-Visible and Intangible: Artists Books Respond to E-Books is a series of events and a gallery exhibition on the topic of Artists Books in the Digital Age held at the Harold F. Johnson Library, Hampshire College in November 7-16, 2012.
The events explore how technology has affected all aspects of artists books – from production to creation to access and use. Some of the works on display in the exhibit Pulp to Pixels: Artists Books in the Digital Age explore interactive generative art with text and image, some function as books in their own right but can be enhanced with technology, and others require a smartphone or tablet to view them at all.

*** November 16-18, 2012 offers the Boston Book Collectors’ Weekend, an event including both the Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair and the Boston Book, Print, and Ephemera Show. Patrons purchasing an admission ticket for Saturday, November 17th to either of the two shows will receive a complimentary admission pass to the other show, good for entry on Saturday only.
The Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair will be held at the Hynes Convention Center during all three days. On Saturday, November 17th at 5:00 p.m., rare book librarians Martin Antonetti and Ron Patkus will offer an illustrated presentation on the history and work of the press in The Art of the Book in Wales.
The Boston Book, Print, and Ephemera Show will take place on November 17th from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Back Bay Events Center. Tom Twetten of Craftsbury Antiquarian Books will be exhibiting some design bindings.

*** The Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, MA is offering Tiny Books with Jennifer Erin Hughes on Sunday, Jan 13, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Make awesome little books that fit in the palm of your hand: stab, accordion, single sheet fold-out books and a few more.
Jennifer will also be teaching Leather-Bound Coptic Books on March 10 & 17, 2013, from 10:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. This simple, elegant, exposed-spine, sewn book dates back to the 2nd century AD. Learn the basics of coptic binding to create a beautiful leather-covered blank book.

*** The North Bennet Street School is offering Calligraphy Concertina: A Hand-Lettered Accordion Book with Maryanne Grebenstein on December 1 – 2 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
In this workshop, students make a one-of-a-kind accordion book while perfecting basic calligraphy forms. Calligraphy, layout decoration and accordion-style binding is taught. Some experience in hand-lettering is recommended but not required.
