Program: Meet the Dremel – A Book Artist’s Dream Tool with Elissa Campbell and Jill Abilock
The Dremel is an amazing handheld rotary tool that can cut, grind, drill, etch, carve, polish, buff and trim materials ranging from bookboard, wood and linoleum to glass, ceramic tile, and metal.
Inspired by Jill Timm and her Amazing Dremel workshop, Jill Abilock and Elissa Campbell will share what makes the Dremel such a valuable tool in their studios. The first part of the presentation will include Dremel basics and how-tos, as well as live demonstrations on a variety of materials.
You will see how the Dremel can be used to:
- Carve linoleum into a handmade stamp
- Quickly and accurately drill holes in bookboard for intricate hand-sewn binding patterns
- Carve, cut, sand and finish wood
- Etch designs into ceramic tiles
- Buff, polish, deboss and distress metal
Elissa and Jill will also bring the sample books of materials they worked with in Jill Timm’s workshop, which, in addition to the above, include glass, mirrors, Plexiglas, and polymer clay.
In the later portion of the meeting, you will have an opportunity to try out a Dremel and experience for yourself what a handy tool it is!
What to bring:
- Dremel tool: Jill and Elissa each have only one Dremel. In order to enable the greatest number of people to get a hands-on feel for the tool, they have requested that anyone who has a Dremel and is willing to allow others to try it out please bring it to the meeting.
- Safety gear: There will be protective eyewear and face masks at the demo table. Anyone wishing to try out a Dremel will be required to wear both. Please note that regular eyeglasses alone are not considered sufficiently protective (there will be safety glasses available that fit over regular eyeglasses). In addition, there may not be enough face masks for everyone to have their own. If, for hygienic purposes, you prefer not to share, you may wish to bring your own face mask.
One final note: Anyone who suffers from asthma or other respiratory issues might want to bring a good quality face mask to wear during the meeting as there will inevitably be a fair amount of dust in the air.
February Meeting Reflections
In February, Jill Abilock gave us a taste of both the simplicity and extraordinary beauty of Japanese stab bindings. From the tiny book earrings to her larger sewn books, she showed inspiring examples of techniques including simple sewing, beading and wire work.
Particularly interesting was Jill’s method and inspiration for developing her own sewing patterns, using on-line resources as well as source books of Indian dot patterns. The hands-on portion provided us with take-home models of traditional patterns, and ideas for book projects of our own.

*** Congratulations to Marianna Holzer who was featured in an article in Seven Days entitled Perfect Pages. Marianna owns Holzer Book Bindery in Hinesburg, where she creates bound books as well as repairs historical or sentimental books for private clients.
*** Artist and teacher Jane Davies presented an inspiring workshop on Saturday, February 22 to a group of fantastic women artists. Jane guided us through the process of finding text, making text, combining text and images, and altering all of the above. The day went too fast, but all the participants came away with a new way to ‘read’ text, as well as some fine techniques to explore.

*** The New England Guild of Book Workers is looking for volunteers for an upcoming Girl Scout event on Saturday April 12th. The event will run from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Camp Maude Eaton at 141 Abbott Street in Andover, MA, which is about 20 miles north of Boston. This program is for Cadette scouts (age 11-14) to earn a Book Artist badge.
There will be an introduction and then five stations that the girls will rotate through which may include printing, accordion folds, a pamphlet, origami book, a scroll and decorating paper. Each rotation will last for about 30 minutes. If you have a book arts technique or project that you’d like to see done with the girl scouts please make some suggestions.
You do not need to be a member of the NEGBW to volunteer. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Todd Pattison at bookandtile@att.net.
*** The annual Book Arts Bazaar at the University of Southern Maine’s Wishcamper Center will take place on Sunday, April 6th. The Bazaar is a festival with book artists, papermakers, bookbinders, printmakers, educators, writers, and all things related to the book.
The Bazaar is free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Wishcamper Center is located on Bedford Street on USM’s Portland Campus. USM’s Kate Cheney Chappell ’83 Center for Book Arts is sponsoring the Book Arts Bazaar and profits from this event support the center.

*** The Mortimer Rare Book Room at Smith College in Northampton, MA will be hosting the first of a new book arts lecture series on Thursday, April 10. Mark Dimunation, Chief of the Rare Book & Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress, will present Single Voice, Many Hands: the Nature of Vision and Collaboration in Contemporary Book Arts. The lecture will be followed by a gala reception.

Book Arts Classes
*** On April 19 – 20, the North Bennet Street School is offering Natural Dyes and Decorative Paper Techniques with Tatiana Ginsberg in Boston.
Working from the Japanese tradition of dyeing paper with natural dyes, students explore creative methods of coloring and patterning handmade papers. Experiment with dyes derived from natural materials such as cochineal, cloves, lotus and much more. The bright and subtle colors derived from plant materials are safe and pleasant to work with and harmonize well with natural fibers.

Program: Decorative Japanese Bindings with Jill Abilock
Elegant in their simplicity, Japanese stab-bound books are also fun to make. Key to the book’s structure, the sewing pattern on the book is also its primary decorative element. Over the years, the basic Japanese stab binding technique – which produces an identical pattern on both the front and back covers of a book – has been adapted to create beautiful, intricate sewn patterns.
During the February meeting, Jill Abilock will share both her traditional stab bound creations (which vary in size from 1/2 inch-square to three feet long) as well as adaptations that include beaded bindings, hammered wire and intricate sewn designs. Jill will also introduce some of the amazing sewing patterns that have been created by other book artists, and offer tips and techniques for creating unique stab bindings of our own.
During the hands-on portion of the meeting, Jill will lead us in making models of several beautiful sewing patterns that can be used as templates for future books.
Jill will provide the materials for making the templates; just bring your enthusiasm and the following tools:
- Awl or needle tool (Jill will have some on hand, but please bring your own if you have one)
- Thread (waxed or unwaxed linen for bookbinding, four- to six-ply embroidery thread, cotton crochet thread (preferably size 10 or 12) or hemp thread of comparable diameter
- Needle with an eye large enough to accommodate your thread of choice
- Small scissors
- Pencil and eraser
- Ruler
January Meeting Reflections
The first meeting of the new year brought out a large group eager to experience Rebecca’s explorations of the Waterfall structure. After an inspiring show of web images and videos, Becky showed us models and finished products in which she adapted the structure to suit her ideas.
For the hands-on portion of the program, we cut, scored, and pasted the templates provided with (mostly) great success, and walked away with models of our own.

We will create expressive pages that can be used for books, with found and created text, personal photos, and found/altered imagery. This will be a great way to jump start your ideas for the Spring exhibit, and to lose those winter blues.

*** The Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, MA is offering Carousel Books with Johanna Finnegan-Topitzer on Sunday, February 23, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This sculptural book opens to form several shadow box-style pages in the round, like a carousel or zoetrope. Create images by cutting, drawing and painting, then precisely cut, fold and assemble accordion pages.

*** On February 17 – 20, the North Bennet Street School is offering Rebind a Book and Make a Custom Box in Boston. In this workshop, students rebind an existing commercial binding by carefully removing the case and make a new binding with a leather spine and false raised bands. Students learn a new binding structure and how to work with leather. In addition, students construct a clamshell box to fit their newly bound book.

Program: Waterfall Flip Book with Rebecca Boardman
Join us in January to ring in the New Year with a hands-on program in which we explore the creative possibilities of waterfall flip books and cards. Rebecca will share models she has created of some of the variations that are possible, and show videos of commercially made cards.
She’ll then lead us in constructing at least one version of this structure. As time allows we’ll all be challenged to come up with our own unique way of using this moveable structure, and then have fun sharing what we’ve all created.
Rebecca will bring templates for at least a couple versions of the waterfall flip book. Please bring the following tools and materials:
- X-Acto knife/cutting blade
- Cutting mat
- Straight edge to cut against
- Bone folder
- Quick Dry glue if you have it handy – (Rebecca will also bring some for us to use)
- Drawing implements, stamps, small punches, ideas for brief text – whatever you might want to use to create the content of this book.
December Meeting Reflections
December’s meeting brought out our brave members on a snowy evening. We shared resources, ideas, challenges and creative work. We created an informal support group to help each other work though problems with work in process. The feedback was generous and welcomed.
Our Guild members have such enthusiasm and appreciation of each other and our creative book projects. We are a lucky group!

Program: Celebrating Book Arts
Join us in December as we celebrate our personal successes, challenges and inspirations in the vast field of book arts.
Bring along your creations to show and tell, share a useful tip, technique or tool you’ve discovered, tap into the collective knowledge of the group to puzzle out a challenge you may be having with a project, or bring us all in on what’s inspired you in the past year – anything from books you’ve read or classes you’ve taken to Pinterest boards, blogs and YouTube videos.
You are also welcome to simply come and soak it all in. In either case, expect to leave energized, inspired and eager to entertain your own creative muse!
November Meeting Reflections
Our third annual Card Tricks and Book Blitz meeting drew a large audience, and delivered on the promise of learning new tricks and simple (or maybe a little complex) structures.
Participants shared stories about where their techniques, cards, and structures came from, and followed with demonstrations. Variations on pop-ups, tunnel structures, and flag books were some of the ideas presented to start off the holiday season with good spirits.

The Book Arts Guild of Vermont Needs You!
The primary mission of the Book Arts Guild of Vermont is to act as both an educational and creative resource in the field of book arts. One of the main ways we strive to achieve this is by offering interesting, enriching and inspiring presentations at our monthly meetings. Your presence at meetings goes a long way to supporting this effort – every presentation is enhanced by everyone who attends.
There are two additional – and crucial – ways that you can help us continue to provide high-quality programs every month. The first would be to recognize that you have a skill, a passion, a favorite technique or a body of work that others would love to learn about, and then take the leap and volunteer to share it with us as a presenter. We are truly a group of eager learners, and your efforts will be rewarded with respect, admiration and gratitude.
The second way that you can help keep our programming strong is by becoming a member. In addition to the benefits you receive (outlined in the sidebar of this newsletter), your paid membership enables us to cover expenses such as the fee for our wonderful, well-lit meeting space (which includes free parking!). It also allows us to reimburse presenters for travel expenses and materials, and pays for our website and email newsletter – key tools for keeping our book arts community in touch and informed.

*** The Boston Athenæum will be holding a conservation open house on Saturday, December 7, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. A panel discussion, Beyond the Athenæum: Life After the Laboratory, will take place at noon.
Behind the glass doors of the Conservation Laboratory, Athenæum staff work to stabilize, preserve, and restore the Athenaeum’s antiquarian and contemporary treasures. Stop by to get a behind-the-scenes look at treatments at the Athenæum, and watch as conservators demonstrate conservation and bookbinding techniques throughout the day – washing paper, paring and gilding leather with antique brass tools, and mending damaged paper documents.
This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. The Athenæum is located at 10½ Beacon Street in Boston, MA.

*** The Eliot School in Jamaica Plain, MA is offering Carousel Books with Johanna Finnegan-Topitzer on Sunday, February 23, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This sculptural book opens to form several shadow box-style pages in the round, like a carousel or zoetrope. Create images by cutting, drawing and painting, then precisely cut, fold and assemble accordion pages.

*** The North Bennet Street School is offering Copperplate Script with Maryanne Grebenstein on Saturday – Sunday, December 14 – 15, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
The beautiful business ‘hand’ of the 18th and early 19th centuries known as Copperplate Script will be taught in this hands-on workshop. Developed centuries after the broad-edged style of traditional calligraphy, this pointed pen style is useful for wedding invitations and other stationery items, as well as poetry and other framable pieces.
